Book Published by St. Kate’s Amy Shaw

Amy ShawWe’re excited that one of our own, Amy Shaw, Head of Archives and Special Collections at St. Kate’s, has written a book that has just been released:
Ole Henricks and His Tunebook: Folk Music and Community on the Frontier.

Published by the UW Press, this study of a fiddling farmer from rural Minnesota even includes musical transcriptions of more than 100 of his dance tunes!

“The story of Ole Hendricks provides a valuable and grounded glimpse of music and social life in rural America in the nineteenth century, bringing into focus the long-overlooked importance of commonplace books—that is, handwritten music notebooks—in the performance and preservation of traditional music.”
—Paul Tyler, Old Town School of Folk Music
